1960 Olympic 1500m Final

Herb Elliott was a hell of a runner. I don't know if a runner like this would have existed in these kind of times. He probably would have kept running for a few more years. Great race. Hardly anyone wins who leads with 2 laps to go.

Reading Rainbow Time: A Dog In A Hat

This is the story of cyclist Joe Parkin's time as a Professional in the late 80's. I feel anyone who wants to become a professional athlete in a fringe sport should probably read this. Right after high school he picks up and flies across the country to the Flemish region in Belgium to try to make it as a professional. He covers almost everything about the sport: teams, coaches, hotels, races, travel, and even the drugs. If you love cycling, great read. If you don't love cycling think of this book as the story of a minor league baseball player bouncing around rookie league to the majors and back again. At points he is living in the attic of a family who lives above the diner they own. While other times he is getting ready for major stage races and even some of the great one day classics in nice hotels while giving autographs.
The Reading Rainbow referrence is because when I think of talking about books that is what always comes to mind. That damn flying butterfly across the sky song.

By far this song was cool. Yet one of the greatest champions of destroing the hatred for reading that was rampant throughout grades K through 5th was surely RUN DMC

Brooks' Super Fans

"If" by Rudyard Kipling

If you can keep your head when all about you
Are losing theirs and blaming it on you;
If you can trust yourself when all men doubt you,
But make allowance for their doubting too;
If you can wait and not be tired by waiting,
Or, being lied about, don't deal in lies,
Or, being hated, don't give way to hating,
And yet don't look too good, nor talk too wise;
If you can dream - and not make dreams your master;
If you can think - and not make thoughts your aim;
If you can meet with triumph and disaster
And treat those two imposters just the same;
If you can bear to hear the truth you've spoken
Twisted by knaves to make a trap for fools,
Or watch the things you gave your life to broken,
And stoop and build 'em up with wornout tools;
If you can make one heap of all your winnings
And risk it on one turn of pitch-and-toss,
And lose, and start again at your beginnings
And never breathe a word about your loss;
If you can force your heart and nerve and sinew
To serve your turn long after they are gone,
And so hold on when there is nothing in you
Except the Will which says to them: "Hold on";
If you can talk with crowds and keep your virtue,
Or walk with kings - nor lose the common touch;
If neither foes nor loving friends can hurt you;
If all men count with you, but none too much;
If you can fill the unforgiving minute
With sixty seconds' worth of distance run -
Yours is the Earth and everything that's in it,
And - which is more - you'll be a Man my son!

This poem is very famous. Obviously being a hard core runner (hard core runner should probably be defined but for now I feel a lot of people can be hard core runners as long as they take running seriously enough to schedule their life around their runs for a good majority of their time), I think the ending of this poem is great. The last line sometimes has popped up randomly in the middle of a long run and therefore fits the bill completely of what this blog is about.

Ryan Hall Gives Back

Found this article here and was really impressed. Ryan Hall will run NYC Marathon and give all the money he receives from appearance fees and then prize money to his brand new charity, The Steps Foundation. I don't know how much that will affect the guy or if it changes anything, yet even if he can still live the way he does, giving away that much money is pretty big. You might not need the brand new car but you sure as hell want it. Plus he and his wife are runners. Careers are short and could end suddenly with a string of injuries. Putting that money away for a rainy day would not be laughed at. Him and his wife through have decided to give it back to make a change. That says something. Actions always speak louder than words.

October 2nd Decides 2016

On October 2nd the International Olympic Association will announce the host city for the 2016 Summer Games. Article here going over the impact Obama could have for Chicago by showing up to the event. The article also goes over how close this decision is. With four cities still left and online betting websites giving different results it will surely be interesting.

Zidane The Scientist

I have heard some football pundits put him in the same realm as Pele and Maradona. He is truly amazing.

Todd Williams Interview

Todd Williams Interview from www.roadsmillslaps.com.

I am hopping that doing two updates a day will increase my small revenue from a penny to a nickel. So I will try to find one sweet article and post it. This interview I really liked. He talks about so many things I find really interesting. My favorite is the technology. I am completely torn on how much to bring science into running. From one angle the '90s were overall not good because a not a good time for the majority of American runners. Some say it was because they got away from the Trials of Miles, Miles of Trials philosophy due to the scientific research that was out at the time. A coach of mine use to say, "You know how we beat the East Africans? We send them our all-weather tracks, our stop watches, our shoes, and gear." Meaning all the East Africans do is run. They don't have all this equipment. They have a dirt track and rocks for weight machines. They wake up every morning and run and sometimes they go really hard.
Yet if you look at American's in cycling one reason I have read for their amazing run to being a nobody in the sport in early 80's to being a dominant player in 20 years with so few guys was because of technology. Remember when Greg Lemond busted out the Aero bars to win '89 Tour.

That was revolutionary. I feel as in all things it has to be a mix. Science to be an aid to the work, not control the work.

Why Ads Because They Make Dreams Real

So I don't know if anyone has notice and most likely judging by the amount of people that actually visit this site no one has, there are ads up for the first time. Why? Because making some money sounded cool, but not Hangover Cool
Yes the movie was great and made laugh but nothing I aspire to be. For one I don't want a baby and I like all my teeth. While some people might say I am giving into to the man and selling my soul to corporate America, I would retort it worked for GreenDay

Now the question becomes what will I do with the money. Ohh the sights of grandeur that have run through my brain since I started having ads up were innumerable.

But than I quickly realized after checking the amount of money I had made in one week that I will most likely find more change in my couch then I get from this website. I am right now up to $0.01. My parents always said count the pennies, nickels, and dimes and the dollars will take care of themselves. What if you only have one penny through. I will count it a lot just to help out those dollars.
Thank you for you time in reading this unneeded post. For you this might have been a waste for me I just accomplished a study break.
